The fabricator understands the harsh environment of an underground limestone mine and knows that HDG is the ultimate coating for this environment. Limestone pieces range from very large to very small particles. The conveyor system in the Boonesborough Quarry Conveyor required a coating that can withstand constant bombardment of small particles and the moisture associated with the underground environment. Understanding that zinc offers sacrificial properties unlike any other coating and that the zinc-iron alloy layers offering up to 250 DPN hardness, the fabricator felt confident they were providing their customer with the most durable coating option available for this unique environment.
In the underground environment, the conveyor system is also subject to constant exposure to humidity and moisture. HDG provides the corrosion performance necessary to withstand this environment. With the metallurgically bonded zinc coating protecting all surfaces and the sacrificial properties of zinc self healing all nicks and chips, the system is receiving the ultimate in coating protection. By moving material 4,560 feet made some portions inaccessible for future maintenance (and photography). HDG eliminates the need for maintenance in these areas.
While the initial cost of HDG was higher than paint, the life-cycle cost was miniscule in comparison to what the maintenance cost would be on a painted structure in this environment. Attempting to maintain a painted structure in this environment would be costly and difficult due to the dust factor and humidity. Hands down, HDG was the ultimate choice.
The fabricator was very familiar with the high performance factors of HDG, and had used HDG for many years on a large number of projects and understand the protective qualities and low maintenance involved with HDG. The selection of HDG for this project was made with ease and a very high confidence level. Fabricator understood that HDG offers superior quality over other coatings. With continuous edge coating and cathodic protection, HDG offered the most logical option for quality and long service life.
Having a long service life that required minimal maintenance was critical to the end user. The estimated 75 year service life of the HDG coating of the project will most likely outlast the life of the quarry.
