The Luminous Veil is a suicide prevention system and is achieved via the stacked superimposition of four vertical fields stretched across the bridge. Two of these fields consist of slender post-tensioned SS rods. The third consists of a cable-web of horizontal and diagonal bracing. The fourth and outermost layer is made by the cruciform bow-string masts which echo the rhythm and spacing of the bridge structure below.
Maintenance painting of exposed steel would consume a significant portion of the budget and would be logistically very difficult to perform. The single offsite application of the hot-dip galvanized coating avoided the costly and complicated painting process. Additionally, the zinc coating protects the steel from the very aggressive atmosphere caused by the emissions from automobiles and trucks. Hot-dip galvanizing made sense from every perspective.
