During the past decade, a new neighborhood has been created in Boston – The Seaport District. What was once a stretch of mostly abandoned South Boston waterfront is now one of its hottest neighborhoods redeveloped with office towers, residential buildings, and “innovation labs.”
The architectural team wanted to make certain the finish on the railings would withstand the effects of continuous exposure to salt spray from the ocean.
One of the newest additions is PIER 4 which includes luxury residences, a premier office tower, and retail options. The Homes at PIER 4, a 106-unit luxury building, is surrounded by water on three sides in Boston’s most dynamic new neighborhood. Taking advantage of the outstanding views, all residences will feature balconies with unrestricted water views from all sides.
The architectural team wanted to make sure residents could enjoy these amazing waterfront views safely for years to come. Knowing the railings would be exposed to continuous salt spray from the ocean, they wanted to be sure the elements could withstand the challenge. Ultimately, the team chose a duplex system of galvanizing and paint, based on previous experience. The hot-dip galvanized steel would provide long-term protection, and the paint, in addition to extra protection, would complement the exterior aesthetics.
