Voted 2023's Best "All Around Off-Road Camper" by Outside Magazine, & featured on MOTORTREND's "Top 21 Off-Road Trailers", Arkto Campers signature G12 design didn't just happen. The successful Edmonton, AB company was conceived during the economic doldrums of the worldwide Covid pandemic and put into action by founders Aaron Neremberg and Matt Gibbons. Their vision was to build a truly durable and self-sustaining overland camper unlike anything previously constructed in North America. The result is the Arkto G1, which takes inspiration from Australian-Style models designed for off road capability, but engineered for the North American marketplace.
Basically, we’re galvanizing because of the rust proofing longevity. There are only a handful of travel trailer manufacturers out there that galvanize. The vast majority do some sort of industrial paint coating, or powder coating. Initially we chose it because of the proximity of the galvanizing plant to our facility... and then when we considered all the benefits of HDG, it was a no-brainer. It ties into the overall build quality of the trailers we manufacture, and one more thing for customers to not have to worry about while owning our trailer. ~Aaron Nerenberg, Principal
There’s no wood used in the construction of the Arkto G12, so rotting is not an issue. The G12 is made from fiber-reinforced plastic composite panels with insulation in between, all resting upon a galvanized steel chassis. Aaron and Mark considered and priced various painting and coating applications for the chassis, but settled on hot-dip galvanizing as the preferential treatment due to the superior corrosion protection, cost, proximity to plant, and over-all quality and aesthetic it provides. This process provides uniform coverage, including hard-to-reach areas, ensuring consistent corrosion protection.
The thick and tenacious nature of galvanized coatings offers resistance to scratches and abrasions, a crucial advantage in off-road scenarios. HDG's dual barrier and cathodic protection prevent corrosive agents such as water, moisture, and road salts from directly contacting and corroding the underlying steel. The success of the galvanizing process for the G12 involved collaboration with a trusted local HDG company. This collaboration ensured that the galvanizing process aligned with the camper's design and usage requirements, addressing considerations such as venting and draining. Components prone to trapping liquid zinc during galvanizing were carefully designed to allow proper drainage, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the corrosion protection.
