This tower project was selected for HDG and Natina for its longevity and aesthetics by the owner DW Tower, LLC. The tower is located 15 miles south of the main entrance to the Grand Canyon so the Natina process was applied to help hide the visibility of the tower making it blend in with the surroundings.
Dale Wilson, salesman for DW Tower, LLC took a helicopter tour of the area and said that he had to be almost right on top of the towers before they became visible.
There are 2 other similar towers in the same area that were not treated with Natina that were easily visible. Natina is a corrosion neutral surface treatment that does not enhance nor detract from the corrosion protection properties provided by the hot-dip galvanizing. It is not a paint or stain.
It chemically reacts with the zinc surface resulting in a compound that is not ultraviolet light sensitive and will not fade, peel or crack due to exposure to sunlight. The ingenuity of this combination of coatings is a game changer for the future!
This tower is being used by 3 of the largest cell phone companies in the United States and has capacity for more. The innovative coating marries form and function, delivering all of the benefits of hot-dip galvanizing and yet blending it into the landscape so as not to detract from the beautiful views of the Grand Canyon!!
This was an innovative solution to communications towers to enhance the overall appearance of the galvanized pieces in the Grand Canyon area. This complex design was easily coated with Natina after it was assembled making it much easier and much more cost effective than trying to powder coat it first and then assemble.
It seems that everyone relies on cellular towers to stay connected these days so it is very important that they are reliable and can be used for many years to come. They needed a durable coating that could stand up to the harsh environments of the desert so naturally hot-dip galvanizing was the coating of choice to resist corrosion for the design life of the towers. Hot-dip galvanized steels metallurgical bond and uniform protection means the towers are abrasion resistant to the blowing sand.
