Rising from the desert sands of Marana, Arizona, the Adonis Substation doesn’t just power homes and businesses; it powers the future of a thriving community. Fifteen years ago, the Adonis Substation was shelved due to shifting priorities. But, with the increased demand for reliable energy in the area, the project re-emerged as a priority. Trico Electric envisioned a substation that could adapt to future requirements and uphold the highest standards of quality and longevity.
Beyond supplying power to thousands of homes and businesses, the project was built with an eye towards sustainability.
To fulfill their vision, the teams considered a coating protection system that would do just that. Hot-dip galvanizing rose to the top as the most cost-effective, long-term solution due to its durability and low-maintenance qualities. In a region where Arizona's relentless sun and harsh climate can prematurely age infrastructure, this coating protection system outperforms paint because it provides a tough, multi-layer bond of protection. Paint would simply scrape or fade with enough sun exposure, while galvanizing maintains its strength due to its metallurgical bonds.
By servicing 48.5 tons of steel, the galvanizer chosen for the project was an essential partner in the process from start to finish. Relying on years of experience in the industry and a close working relationship with the teams involved, they were able to seamlessly move the project along, meeting all deadlines.
Throughout the course of the project challenges did arise, but the galvanizer was able to rise to the occasion. Concern about ventilation of the material was at the forefront of the customer’s mind, but the galvanizer was able to provide proper education and support to put the customer at ease. Designing optimal drainage points for complex tubular sections, the teams worked together to ensure that every piece achieved impeccable quality and the longevity they were looking for.
Beyond supplying power to thousands of homes and businesses, the project was built with an eye towards sustainability. The structure will be able to stand nearly 100 years down the road with minimal maintenance and when it reaches its life cycle, it can be recycled rather than relegated to a landfill.
The Adonis Substation stands as a testament to innovative design and sustainability that will allow the steel members within the project to stand strong long into the future, working quietly as a structure that continues to benefit those in the community of Marana.
