Coon Rapids Ice Rink
Coon Rapids, MN United States | 2011
The River Bank State Park is used for ice skating and roller skating, among other activities, throughout the year. Since the park is used year around, shutting down for maintenance is cost prohibitive and an inconvenience to the community members that utilize the facility on a regular basis. Painting over galvanizing met the New York State Department of Parks criteria with regards to low maintenance and appearance.
The "Y" Columns were used to resemble a ships mast and boom once a white screen was attached after installation. The "Y" Columns posed some challenges since the fabrication was nearing the kettle limits in size. Lifting lugs were attached in strategic locations in order to get the correct pitch and angle when coming out of the zinc bath. It was imperative the final appearance after the column was removed out of the zinc bath provided a smooth and uniform finish that would be suitable for painting over.
