In West Des Moines, the Pedestrian Tree Canopy (Forever Trees) has transformed a routine bridge into an inviting, nature-inspired space for hundreds of pedestrians to enjoy. Conceived as an artful blend of form and function, the canopy mimics the branches of a tree, creating a shaded walkway that brings a touch of nature into an urban environment. Metal Pros in Wichita, Kansas, took on the challenge of building this vision, aware that it needed not only to be visually compelling but also resilient enough to endure the elements. For this, the team considered a coating protection system that could stand up to the test of weathering and the environment.
The decision to use hot-dip galvanizing wasn’t just about durability—it was also about creating a low-maintenance structure that could retain its look and integrity with minimal upkeep.
Hot-dip galvanizing was the most logical choice, offering both corrosion resistance and the aesthetic appeal that the team was hoping for. The team also considered the harsh season changes in the Midwest, switching from extreme highs to extreme lows throughout the course of a year. Traditional paint methods would scrape or rust off with time, leaving the customer in a rut to maintain the structure over time. These repairs can be costly over the lifecycle of the project. The decision to use hot-dip galvanizing wasn’t just about durability—it was also about creating a low-maintenance structure that could retain its look and integrity with minimal upkeep.
By partnering with Metal Pros, the galvanizer ensured that each component would be expertly coated. The branches, with their intricate shapes and angles, required special preparation for the galvanizing process. The canopy design itself was custom made and unique, showcasing the intricacies of the design and realistic features compared to an actual tree in the environment. Because the design was so meticulous with different shapes, the team had to break it into sheets for the galvanizing process.
The galvanizer was able to provide support to the fabricator by educating the team on proper vent and drain hole placement to ensure that each crevice of the structure would have uniform coating protection. This level of attention to detail ensured that each branch-like structure would be protected against weather and wear, achieving a polished finish that would retain its aesthetic nearly 100 years down the road with little to no maintenance for the customer.
Once installed, the canopy took on its full form, providing substantial shade to people in the community as they walk across the bridge. The canopy has not only added aesthetic value but has also set a new standard for functional public art, combining environmental durability with visual appeal. For the fabricator, the Pedestrian Tree Canopy has become a showcase of their versatility, proving their ability to execute both structural and ornamental projects. With a nod to the beauty and strength of trees in the environment, this canopy will hold similar characteristics, serving the community for generations and offering the people of West Des Moines a place to pause and enjoy the surrounding area.
