Austin Community College Pedestrian Bridge

The Bob Hope Airport located in prestigious Burbank, California installed a unique elevated pedestrian bridge walkway system that required 800 tons of galvanized steel over a 340 yard span. This elevated pedestrian bridge walkway system served a dual purpose by both connecting the air terminal with the new expanded rental car center (11 different companies) and allowing airport vehicle traffic to access parking lots located below the bridge.
Hot-dip galvanizing was specified not only for overall sustainability but also for its reasonable initial costs and renowned corrosion performance.
An isolation system capable of self-centering for torsional eccentricities is designed into the structure to protect the integrity of the bridge from earthquakes which are common in the Southern California region. A required life-cycle cost analysis resulted in specifying hot-dip galvanizing to help combat environmental corrosion and create a maintenance-free service life.
In the initial design phase, great care was taken to insure that the complex canopy frames would fit into the galvanizers kettle and the fabricator (who had prior hot-dip galvanizing experience) worked closely with the galvanizer to insure a successful galvanizing experience. A meticulous drain hole placement assessment took place before the frames were fabricated to guarantee the frames drained properly and that the finished product met the highest quality standards before being delivered to the job site for erection within the required turnaround time requirements outlined in the contract.
Hot-dip galvanizing was specified not only for overall sustainability but also for its reasonable initial costs and renowned corrosion performance. In addition, it has a durable coating with a clean aesthetic appearance that fits in perfectly with the retro decor of this airport. The new elevated pedestrian bridge walkway system clearly reduces the travelers stress and time spent in the airport when transitioning between the rental car services and the daily flight schedules.
