Elevated Finishing for AESS Projects

Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) makes up a growing portion of the North American building market and presents a large opportunity for HDG to be specified. For galvanizers to be successful and profitable in this market, visual appeal is important when it comes to winning bids and earning repeat work from architects. This presentation will address a combination of galvanizing best practices and talking points with the customer that can minimize issues before they can become costly on many levels. Firsthand experience and example projects will be explored. AGA Technical Director Alana Fossa will also give a preview of the AGA’s new AESS Guide for Galvanizers and the new online AESS Training Course for Galvanizers.

Riverdale Mills

Virtual Plant Tour Preview

Come learn about what to expect on Wednesday morning’s galvanizing plant tour of Riverdale Mills Corporation. Riverdale Mills is a leading American manufacturer of premium quality welded wire mesh fabrics for the marine, security, construction and agriculture industries. Riverdale invented Aquamesh®, the industry-standard wire mesh used for building lobster and aquaculture traps, and WireWall®, a high-security fencing wire mesh used globally to protect embassies, airports, refineries, and borders.

Wet Storage Stain – Small Group Discussion

Wet storage stain, the visible formation of zinc oxide and zinc hydroxide on the surface of the galvanized steel, is one of the most common complaints from inspectors and end-users regarding hot-dip galvanized products. Attendees will break into small groups led by TechForum planning committee members to discuss and exchange ideas on addressing customer concerns, cleaning vs. weathering, passivations, and other solutions.

AGA Inspection App Update

In 2022, the AGA launched an update to our popular Inspection of Galvanized Steel App, available for free in both the Apple and Google Play stores. The App is a visual guide to identifying various surface conditions present after hot-dip galvanizing. A demo of the new app will be provided.

Field Solution to Remedy Wet Storage Stain

This presentation will explore the use of a surface-tolerant organic zinc-rich paint technology to address customer concerns related to wet storage stain in the field. Practical considerations regarding adhesion testing versus surface preparation will be discussed along with case studies such as the refurbishment of 24 HDG radio towers in 2020.

Strategies to Inspect Thermal Spray Zinc Metalizing Repairs

Thermal spray zinc metalizing and its alloys are used in many industries to provide corrosion protection but also to provide repair of hot-dip galvanized coatings. To ensure continued coating performance in these harsh environments, it is necessary to properly inspect the thermal spray metalizing. This presentation will examine how the surface preparation and thermal spray processes (arc spray and flame spray) are similar to and different from other corrosion protection systems as well as best practices for inspection at the HDG plant.

HDG Carbon Emissions – Industry Update

Come learn about the activities and efforts of the AGA’s Climate Change / Carbon Emissions Task Group comprised of AGA members. The goals of this task group are to develop a template to assist any HDG member capture/report carbon emissions for facilities in a consistent manner and with consistent/accurate terminology and to establish a general list of best practices for reducing these emissions at plant level.

Stormwater Run-off from HDG Structures & SDG Zinc Sector Roadmap

Come learn about efforts from the Zinc Stormwater Run-off Task group (joint effort of AGA & IZA) to determine sources of misconceptions regarding zinc runoff and standards prohibiting zinc coatings near sensitive waters which are deterring specifiers in the marketplace from specifying HDG bridges, buildings, and more. Additionally, an overview of IZA’s Zinc Sector SDG Roadmap will be provided.

Decarbonization Options for the Hot Dip Galvanizing Furnace

Global concerns have recently resulted in an interest in the potential decarbonization of the steel industry. To date, most of the focus has been on the steelmaking process. Meanwhile, there has been very little attention on the downstream hot dip galvanizing operation. In hot dip galvanizing, the largest direct generators of carbon dioxide emissions are the galvanizing furnaces. Most operations in North America utilize natural gas-fired furnaces, which have been the most economical option. However, it may now be time to start considering the possibility of retrofitting existing furnaces for the purpose of reducing or eliminating carbon dioxide emissions. This paper examines a typical hot dip galvanizing operation, providing an evaluation of the baseline carbon dioxide generation rate, options for achieving reductions or elimination of carbon dioxide emissions, and the potential economic impact.

Burnett Curve for Sulfuric Pickling

The Burnett curve, established in 2022, describes the effect of iron concentration on pickling rates at 20 C (68 F) for sulfuric acid, similar to the Kleingarn Curve for hydrochloric acid. This presentation will explain ongoing research efforts by AGA to investigate the regeneration of solutions by removing a part of the ineffective solution and replacing it with fresh acid, water, or the contents from another bath to lower the iron concentration and improve cleaning times. This practice greatly extends the life of the bath, optimizes acid use, minimizes disposal, and overall improves sustainable practices in the HDG process.
