The specification and inspection of hot-dip galvanized (HDG) steel is relatively simple. When specifying galvanized steel, you should be familiar with the following ASTM specifications: A 123/A 123 M, A 153/A 153 M, and A 767/A 767 M. There are also similar specifications in Canada (CSA G 164) and for the international community (ISO 1461). Additionally, there are a number of other related specifications pertaining to galvanizing and galvanizing materials. All of the specifications related to hot-dip galvanizing are listed in the following pages. If you would like a compilation of the ASTM specifications on galvanizing, obtain a copy through our site, or contact your local galvanizer.
Inspection of hot-dip galvanized steel is also simple, because zinc will not adhere to unclean steel. Therefore, visual inspections are very accurate and easy to perform. Beyond visual inspection, magnetic thickness gauges are used to measure coating thickness to ensure minimum coating thickness requirements are met.
