Eagle Ice Plant
This project was a refurbishment, as a new unit would have cost a quarter-million dollars to be produced. Hot-dip galvanizing the refurbishment produced a savings of more than $165,000. Corrosion resistance was highly important, as the FDA mandates strong provisions for cleanliness. The main difficulty in this project was stripping off the old galvanized coating and removing stickers. Some of the pieces were made of aluminum and had to be prepped before galvanizing. The ice augers had to be exceptionally smooth, so they would not have to file any of the material to prevent shavings from getting into the ice. After speaking with the customer and seeing the savings that were offered, the client explained that galvanizing this structure gave him more of a market share, because the state health department gave him a rating of 100%. The client also said that others in his industry would be likely to follow his lead.
