There are a number of other corrosion protection systems to consider as well as hot-dip galvanizing. The subsequent pages will give you information on other forms of corrosion protection and how they compare to galvanizing.
Other common corrosion protection systems include:
- duplex systems
- zinc-rich paint
- continuous line galvanizing
- paints/powder coatings
- other steels
A duplex system, i.e. painting or powder coating over hot-dip galvanized steel, is common in very aggressive environments when either one will not last the prescribed amount of time or when superior corrosion protection is desired with specific color. Metallizing or painting with a zinc-rich formula may be more appropriate for structural pieces or fabrications too large to fit in the galvanizing kettle. And special steels such as stainless or weathering may be desirable from an aesthetic perspective. However, their unique performance characteristics should be clearly understood before specifying.
